VM includes anything plant-based that’s picked up in the fleece — grass seeds, burrs, straw, even bits of hay. Too much VM means more processing and lower returns. A clean paddock and good shed prep help reduce VM. Wool with less than 1.5% VM is considered low contamination and fetches better prices.
